(1767-1794)
   political figure
Born in Marseilles, Charles-Jean-Marie Barbaroux, an attorney, embraced the ideas of the revolution of 1789 and, on August 10, 1792, led the Federalist section from Marseille during the taking of the Tuileries in Paris. Elected deputy for Bouche-du-Rhône to the Convention, he joined the girondins and, while they were being eliminated from power by the montagnards, tried to organize a resistance in Normandy during the federalist insurrection with François Buzot and Jérome Pétion de Villeneuve (Caen, 1793). He failed and, after fleeing to Bordeaux, Barbaroux was captured, condemned, and executed.
